The No. 4 is generally the standard for smoothing planes. The larger rear tote accommodates most hands, the heft and size of the body are ideal for most smoothing tasks, and the rear tote makes extended use a little more comfortable.

Clifton Bench Planes are made in Sheffield, UK, from the finest materials. The frog and frog seating in the body of these planes are based on the Bedrock design, meaning the seating pad in the body is full face, fully machined to mate with an equivalent full face, with a fully machined underside of the frog. This ensures absolute stability of the frog, providing a firm and solid base for the cutting iron. The Bedrock design is probably the most rigid and effective clamping mechanism of any bench plane available.
